Hemingway, Ernest (1899-1961)
The First Forty-Nine Stories, and the Play The Fifth Column.

New York: Random House, Inc., [1942].

First Modern Library Giant edition, octavo; inscribed by Hemingway to his trusted doctor and friend, Dr. George Saviers on page 307 in black ink above the title heading for "Big Two-Hearted River: Part I"; "To George, this was as good as I could do it then or maybe always. Ernest"; bound in gray publisher's cloth; rebacked with a small section of the spine panel including the label preserved, boards stained, corners worn, endpapers with section of foxing; original publisher's dust jacket; corners clipped not affecting price, a few tiny splatters and one or two small nicks; occasional stains, a few dog-ear creases, pencil annotations in "The Killers"; with George Saviers's ownership inscription dated March 1943 at Berkeley, California; sold at Christie's 10 December 1999, Lot 194; 8 x 5 1/2 in.

A local doctor in Ketchum, Idaho, Saviers was not only Hemingway's physician but also a close confidant. The pair would often shoot skeet together and nearer to his death in 1960, Hemingway used Saviers as a go-between when arranging payments for the young Irish writer Valerie Danby-Smith which he wished to conceal from his wife Mary Welsh. (See Christie's Sale 10 December 1999, Lot 200 for A.L.S).
