Hemingway, Ernest (1899-1961) Two Books from Hemingway's Library.

Hemingway, Ernest (1899-1961)
Two Books from Hemingway's Library.

Maj. Frederick Russell Burnham's (1861-1947) Scouting on Two Continents. Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1927. Later edition, octavo, signed in ink on the flyleaf: "Property of E. Hemingway, Finca Vigia, San Francisco de Paula, Cuba"; bound in dark red publisher's cloth; worn; 9 x 6 in.

D.B. Olsen's (1907-1973) The Cat Wears a Noose. Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran and Co., Inc., 1944. First edition, octavo, penciled notes by Hemingway on lower pastedown: "Tell Steve: Write note" alongside a Paris address; original orange publisher's cloth; a bit dull, corners bumped; lacking original dust-jacket; 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 in.

Laid in are two cards from A.E. Hotchner, one recording plans for a television adaptation of Maj. Burnham's adventures hosted by Gary Cooper. Enclosed with the card is a carbon copy of the agreement signed by Hotchner and Roderick Burnham, extending the option for another year. In the second card, Hotchner recounts the circumstances under which Hemingway gave him this copy of The Cat Wears a Noose during a visit to the author in Cuba. Hotchner needed something to read for the trip home. The Cat, was one of Hemingway's favorites per Hotchner, who also mentions the existence of a few notes recorded on the rear pastedown that may be in his hand.
