ON THE ROAD HEMINGWAY, ERNEST and MARY. File of correspondence between the Hemingways (primarily Mary) and Cuban Official Mario Lazo. Five Typed Letters, two of which are Signed by Mary. Mostly single or double 8vo pages, all on Finca Vigia stationery; one letter, dated 3 August 1958, contains several drafts, incorporating the corrections and edits suggested by Hemingway in a full 8vo page in hemingway's hand plus Mary's final copy, addressed to General Fulgencia Batista (in English and Spanish); 4 replies from Lazo; all collected in a modern 3-ring binder. San Francisco de Paula, Cuba, 1958

  • Notes: The letters reflect what became a passionate cause for Mary: the maintenance and beautification of the main highways in Cuba''s Yumuri Valley. "This road, if kept as beautiful and unspoiled as it is, will always be a monument to those who built it . . . No man can make the Yumuri Valley, but one man can keep the sight of it unspoiled for millions. If you keep the beauty from being destroyed, I think you will always be proud of your action." Lazo states in one of his replies: "Your letter to Batista was excellent. I took a copy home last night and read it to the family."
