HEMINGWAY, ERNEST Autograph Letter Signed, in pencil, to an editor of New Republic Elizabeth Huling ("Dear Miss Huling"),

"I AM NOT A CATHOLIC WRITER" HEMINGWAY, ERNEST Autograph Letter Signed, in pencil, to an editor of New Republic Elizabeth Huling ("Dear Miss Huling"), expressing appreciation for Mr. Bishop's article and declining to support any opposition to it, stating that he is nearly finished with a novel [probably To Have and Have Not], expressing his intention to go to Spain, stating that his politics do not conform to those of the Catholic Church, denying his intention to isolate himself except occasionally for his work, and declining to approve [publication of?] a letter. 1 page, 4to; folds, faint stain at center. "Key West," 15 December 1936

  • Notes: "Thank you very much for sending me Mr. Sylvester's letter . . . . I appreciate his . . . excellent intentions toward me and my peacocks but I like Mr. Bishop's article and see no need to be defended from it. We also had peacocks on the farm in Michigan when I was a kid. Am getting almost to the end of a novel and as soon as it is over am going to Spain. I am a writer and I am a Catholic but I am not a Catholic Writer and my politics are not those of the church. Least of all have I ever had any intention of isolating myself from the world in any way or at any time except for a few weeks at a time to get my work done. This . . . is not for publication. . . ."
John Peale Bishop's partly critical article, "Homage to Hemingway," appeared in the November 10, 1936 issue of New Republic.
