HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. 1944 Voyage to Victory: An Eye-witness Report of the Battle for a Normandy Beachhead.
HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. Voyage to Victory: An Eye-witness Report of the Battle for a Normandy Beachhead. Promotional booklet. 8vo, wire-stapled mottled grey wrappers; original yellow dust jacket in black, red, and white, only a 3-mm split at bottom of first fold, very minor thumb-soiling at edges, flaps and leaves slightly toned. Near fine condition; unusual for this scarce item. Hanneman A21. New York: Crowell-Collier, 1944
- Notes: scarce first separate publication of his first-hand account in the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach from the closest vantage point possible on the first day of battle. Never issued for public sale. It first appeared a week earlier in the July 22nd issue of Collier''s, a copy of which is included in this lot. Hemingway was listed on the masthead as staff correspondent from July 8, 1944 to May 12, 1945. As Hemingway states in the prologue: "Real war is never like paper war, nor do accounts of it read much like the way it looks. But if you want to know how it was in an LCV(P) on D-Day when we took Fox Green beach and Easy Red Beach on the sixth of June, 1944, then this is as near as I can come to it."
- Condition: All items are offered for sale subject to Swann Galleries'' standard terms and conditions of sale, which are published in our catalogues.
