HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. Group of 9 Signed Pieces. Includes 8 autographed memos and a signed check. Vp, vd
- Notes: Check accomplished and Signed, "Ernest M. Hemingway" to Paul M. Pfeiffer drawn on the National City Bank of New York for $50. Approximately 2 3/4x6 1/2 inches; cancellation perforations touching signature; framed. scarce. Hemingway signed checks are rarely encountered, with only one other example listed in American Book Prices Current in the last 20 years. This autograph is also of note as it is signed with his middle initial. It is unclear if it is to Hemingway''s father-in-law or brother-in-law -- both named Paul M. Pfeiffer. Originally from the Marcia and John Goin Ernest Hemingway Collection (see item 1, IV). New York, 20 October 1932 * Group of 8 unsigned Autograph memos, in pencil, mostly lists of things to do or supplies needed for a fishing trip on the Pilar -- including whiskey, gin, olives, beer and a machine gun! -- or concerning the boat. About 350 words in all. Mostly 1 page, small 8vo sheets, three on his imprinted memo pad stationery; poor condition, with significant worm holes. With a memo handwritten by his wife. Np, 1930s. Unusual Hemingway ephemera, showing his sense of humor. Besides the lists of provisions noted above, one reminds him to "go to confession." Others refer to various people -- including Arnold Samuelson, Helen Duncombe, Arnold Gingrich. From the Marcia and John Goin Hemingway Collection, to a dealer, to present owner (item 1, VII).
