Notes: first edition, first issue, with the f. a. i. banner on endpapers and an als by martha gellhorn and a Western Union Telegram from Hemingway''s first agent and lawyer, Maurice Speiser, both to Ruth Steigman, a woman who was instrumental for her work with the Emergency Ambulance Committee. Also enclosed is a photograph of an unidentified ambulance driver and his vehicle.
Hemingway was invited to cover the Spanish Civil War as a correspondent for the North American Newspaper Alliance. He spent his initial two months there in the spring of 1937, the first of four visits over the next year and a half. Once in Spain, he worked with Dos Passos, Lillian Hellman, and others on a propaganda film, The Spanish Earth, which was screened in New York and at the Roosevelts'' White House to raise funds for the Republican ambulance fund. Gellhorn was tireless in her efforts to raise money for the group. She warmly thanks Steigman for "having been the committee." One page, folded 8vo, New York, nd [though likely early 1938] on St. Moritz letterhead, half in ink, the last sentence and signature in pencil. The telegram from Speiser requests that Steigman meet him at Hemingway''s apartment at the Hotel Barclay the next morning. Single 8vo sheet, folded with splits along creases, 17 March, 1938. Also included is a postmarked envelope from a donation to the Committee. A note on the rear indicates that it came from Joan Crawford, and a portion of her 426 Bristol Avenue address is still visible.
