  • Notes: first edition, first issue. inscribed and signed by hemingway : "For Paul Zuckerman / yours always / Ernest Hemingway." Torrents was Hemingway's first novel and third book which holds a place in publishing lore. It was written with the intention of releasing Hemingway from his current publishing contract with Boni and Liveright with the hope of moving over to Scribner's. If Boni did not like the next work submitted by Hemingway, they could refuse it and break the contract. A sarcastic work parodying Sherwood Anderson and his contemporaries, the satiric Torrents did the trick, was refused by Boni, and led Hemingway into his long relationship with Scribner's. A4a.
