HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. Typed Letter Signed, to "Dear Miss Johnson," refusing to allow a re-print of his short story, "On The Blue Water."

"THERE IS ONE BOOK BY ME ABOUT THE SEA ON SALE AT PRESENT" HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. Typed Letter Signed, to "Dear Miss Johnson," refusing to allow a re-print of his short story, "On The Blue Water." In the blank area below the letter is written, in another hand, in pencil, "We offered $600," and beside it, "Story Killed." 1 page, 4to, "Finca Vigia" stationery; minor scattered creases. San Francisco de Paula, Cuba, 5 November 1952

  • Notes: "I am very sorry that I cannot give you permission to re-publish 'On the Blue Water,' which first appeared in the April 1936 issue of Esquire. There is one book by me about the sea on sale at present and have no wish to saturate the public.
"For your future information I would never be interested in re-printing anything, ever, anywhere, for the fee you name."
The Old Man and the Sea was loosely based on the real-life account that Hemingway retold in "On the Blue Water," but in the end of that story, the fisherman had to be rescued, "crying . . . half crazy from his loss," which was certainly not the case for Santiago in the 1952 novel.
