HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON (1908-2004) On the Banks of the Marne.

HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON (1908-2004)
On the Banks of the Marne. Silver print, the image measuring 9¼x14 inches (23.5x35.6 cm.), with two of Cartier-Bresson's credit stamps on verso. 1938; printed 1960s

Provenance: From the Estate of Richard T. Rosenthal, Philadelphia

  • Condition: Cartier Bresson's well-known photograph is overall in good to very good condition. The print is lush and rich, with densely packed detail and tonal variety.

The surface of the print evidences a few surface imperfections, which are primarily visible only under close examination and strong raking light, and located in the left quadrant of the image close to the edges. The imperfections are mostly obscured by the graphic qualities of the image, not visible under normal viewing condition, and listed below for the purpose of a detailed report.

They include: a very faint linear surface impression (under the black hat), two short vertical creases, both with no emulsion loss (one located in the black hat, the other in the lower left quadrant close to the edge), a small dimple in the shade area of the fishing boat, a few spots of professional retouching in the grass as well as two tiny creases on the upper corners. Also, there a few black spots on the shirt of one of the sitters. Those are in the negative and not on the surface of the print.

There are no margins on the print, its corners are slightly rubbed, and a few small and scattered chips may be found at the extreme edges. While apparent, these are not obtrusive to the image. Its verso is clean.
