HENRI CASSIERS (1858-1944) RED STAR LINE / ANTWERPEN-AMERIKA. 1899.
43 1/2x59 3/4inches. Couleurs Berger & Wirth, Leipzig.
Condition B+: restored losses, repaired tears and minor overpainting along vertical and horizontal folds; repaired tears in margins.
Cassiers was a painter from Flanders who designed many successful posters, most notably for his main client, the Antwerp-based Red Star Line ship company. Whether he was advertising ships, cars, elixirs or resorts, his style primarily revolved around the people of his country. His posters are populated by fishermen, farmers, and peasants within the typically flat landscapes of the region. This poster is one in a series he created for the Red Star Line featuring residents of the region in their ethnic attire, seen from behind as they watch the ships go by. Of all the designs, this one with women and children is the most charming, the horizontal format enhancing the silent emptiness of the peaceful scene. Belgique no. 61, Cassiers p. 74 no. 70, DFP-II, 997.
