Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

1864-1901

[Au Moulin Rouge, La Goulue et Sa Sœur]. 1892.

Condition A. Loosely tipped to mat on verso with archival tape. Stamped in lower margin '43 in red ink, hand-signed "T Lautrec" in pencil. From a signed and numbered edition of 100. Paper. Matted and framed.

Lautrec's first limited edition, printed in a run of 100 signed and numbered copies, with Ancourt's ink stamp. The print was offered for sale in October 1892 for 20 francs by art dealers Boussod, Valadon et Cie. The image depicts "La Goulue" (Louise Weber) with her sister, Jeanne Weber, entering the famed Moulin Rouge. Best-known in Lautrec's poster oeuvre as the kicking Can-Can dancer in his three-sheet Moulin Rouge poster, La Goulue ("The Glutton") was his "working class girl" muse, known for her bawdy reputation, voracious appetite and provocative fashions. In the same year, he painted her in a frontal view, entering the Moulin Rouge, arms linked with her sister in this same dress, and another lady (an alleged lover) on her left. A rare print of the famous performer.

Wittrock 1, Adriani 6.
23½x17½ inches, 60x44 cm. Edw. Ancourt, Paris.
