Ries emigrated to America before the Second World War and after a stint in the army became a photojournalist in Europe, working for The New York Times. He is best known for his pictures from ravaged post-war Germany and the Berlin Airlift. In 1955 he turned his talent towards commercial photography and opened his own studio. For his former employer he produces a sharp and precise domestic scene infused with mid-century Madison Avenue panache.
