Herbert Matter 1907-1984 America Calling. 1941 40 x 30 inches. U. S.Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. Condition A-: restored pinholes in top margin; minor restoration at edges. A native of Switzerland, Matter studied art with painters Fernand Leger and Amedee Ozenfant in Paris, where he also assisted Cassandre and the architect Le Corbusier. An early master of photomontage, he secured his reputation both in his homeland and abroad with a series of travel posters commissioned by the Swiss National Tourist Office between 1932-1936 In 1936, Matter permanently settled in New York, where, after opening a photography studio, he worked for such major clients as Harper's Bazaar and Knoll Furniture. Given his talent, it is not surprising that he was approached during WWII to design posters. One of his few wartime images, this poster, promoting defense on the civilian front, shows a diving eagle with dynamic splashes of red and blue, which help to convey the impression of speed while infusing the poster with a bit of nationalistic panache! ref. & ill. Foto Plakat by Josef Muller-Brockmann and Karl Werbmann,At Verlag, Aaran, Stuttgart, 1989 - p.33, no.22
