HIERONYMOUS COCK
Prospectus Colossæi.

Etching, 1551. 245x328 mm; 9 3/4x13 1/8 inches, wide margins. A superb, richly-inked, early impression of this very scarce etching, with strong contrasts and with the guide lines for the text in the lower margin still distinct.

Cock (1518-1570) was a printmaker and publisher from Antwerp who traveled to Rome in the late 1540s, producing numerous studies of antiquities throughout the city and publishing a series of etched views of Rome, mainly centered around the Colosseum, Præcipua Aliquot Romanae Antiquitatis Ruinarum Monimenta, in 1551.
