HILL, AMBROSE POWELL. Autograph Letter Signed, "A.P. Hill," to Alexander Dallas Bache ("Prof A.D. Bache"), reporting that he has sent his map of the Boston shore, offering explanations for the delay, asking whether he has a piece of surveying equipment, and relating the locations to which mutual friends have been ordered. 3 pages, 8vo, written on a folded sheet; minor staining at center vertical fold. Washington, 30 August [1860]

  • Notes: "The Boston map is off to day. . . . I do not send this off with the same confidence attending the Mobile, but with the keep of Lieut Bent I have done all I could.
    "Capt Davis' map is so worn that a greater part of it had to be replotted, and Wadsworth's had to be entirely re-reduced, which reduction I send on also . . . . There is a discrepancy between some of the islands . . . as represented in W's chart and as on Davis' . . . .
    "Maj. J. Reynolds has been ordered to West Point as Commandant, . . . Capt Williams to Oregon and Capt Withers here. . . ."
    Hill (1825-1865) served in the Mexican-American War and the Seminole Campaign, then leaving the army to join Virginia's forces at the beginning of the Civil War; he fought in the Seven Days Battles, Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Chancellorsville, and he commanded the Confederate forces as lieutenant general during the first day at Gettysburg; he was killed in battle at the close of the siege of Petersburg.
