HINE, LEWIS W. (1874-1940)
Empire State Building ["Icarus"]. Silver print, 9 1/2x7 1/2 inches (24x19 cm.), with Hine Ewing Galloway and other hand stamps, a lengthy mimeographed caption, and handwritten notations on verso. 1931
-
Notes: an extraordinary bird's-eye-view of midtown manhattan from the 86th floor of the "eighth wonder of the world." Hine (1874-1940), who was hired by his neighbor, Richard Shreve, a partner in the architectural firm that designed the building, was its chief photographer. This spectacular vintage print--which is undeniably authentic--was sold through the picture agency Ewing Galloway, where the last line of their typewritten credit line reads: "Charge will be doubled if credit line is omitted."
See: Hine's men at work, photographic studies of modern men and machines, where a variant view, entitled "Skyboy," image appears as the frontispiece illustration (New York, 1932).
