Hiroshi Ohchi Five Posters. 1954-1955 28.25 x 20.25 inches. Hiroshi Ohchi, Tokyo. Condition varies, generally B+. In the 1950s, thanks inlarge part to the Korean War, the Japanese economy rebounded from thedisaster of WWII, creating a market for advertising. The Japanese advertising style shows a debt to Western trends, but also has a native flavor all of its own. Alongside designers like Takashi Kono, Kenji Ho, and Tadashi Ohashi, as well as such internationally renowned Japanese graphic artists as Yusaku Kamekura, and Hiromu Hara Ohchi was part of an artistic vanguard that was striving to create aJapanese Modern Style japonica. These five posters by Ohchi are, in this sense, very precious documents of an important time in Japanese cultural history. Printed both in silk-screen and lithograph, these posters show us a type of advertising in the style of the period with a strong Japanese graphic sense in the "mise en page" and the use offlat colors.
