Hogarth The Gate of Calais, or the Roast Beef of Old England. Etching and engraving, 1748-49 385x 461 mm; Second state (of 2). Trimmed on the plate mark and mounted at extreme edges verso, pale time stain. A very good impression. Hogarth's commentary on food or the lack thereof, showing a plump friar admiring a slab of beef being carried to a " Madm. Grandsire of Calais" who ran a hotel for the English. The other characters portray the opposite end of the spectrum, such as the French peasants walking off to the right past the dishevelled Scotsman with their pot of soup maigre or the woman in the left foreground with their Lenten fish.
