First edition of Ogilby's translation, folio, title page printed in red and black, added engraved title and portrait of Ogilby, and full-page plate of a statue of Homer, without the portrait of Charles II; the story illustrated with fifty full-page plates; preliminary leaf b1 in the Life of Homer fore-edge margin trimmed away with losses to a few words in the verses at the top; c3 in the same section trimmed in a similar way to a lesser extent, leaving about an inch of margin beyond the text; first leaf of book II (31/32) with an old horizontal tear across the page mended with tissue; other short tears, other signs of use; red color added to bleeding wounds in some plates; ex libris Wriothesley Russell, 2nd Duke of Bedford (1608-1711) with his engraved armorial bookplate dated 1703 pasted on verso of typographical title, signature on ffep, and Woburn Abbey book label pasted inside front board; ex libris Harvard College, given in memory of Lionel de Jersey (Harvard 1915 killed in action in the First World War in 1918); de-accessioned with circular release stamp initialed in pencil by William A. Jackson on bookplate and verso of typographical title; ex libris John B. Doukas with bookplate inside back board; bound in modern full bonded leather with central portions of the presumable original leather panels inset; 16 3/4 x 10 1/2 in.
