HOMER, WINSLOW; illustrator. The Jumping Jack's Journey.

HOMER, WINSLOW; illustrator. The Jumping Jack's Journey. Wood-engraved illustrations after Homer [see note] in the ads in the rear for a series titled Mrs. Follen's Twilight Stories. 12mo, publisher's gilt-and blindstamped red cloth, some holes along spine, rubbed; scattered foxing. Boston: Whittemore, Niles and Hall, 1858

extremely early winslow homer illustrations. After finishing an apprenticeship to J. H. Bufford in 1857, Homer began working in Boston as a freelance illustrator, with his first work appearing in Ballou's Pictorial. While only three of the eleven "frontispieces" in the ads in the rear are signed "WH" (and two barely visible) it is likely that others are by him as well. However, they are unsigned by Homer and merely signed by the engravers John Andrew and D. T. Smith. Hamilton 1722a.
