HOMER, WINSLOW. Autograph Letter Signed, to collector Thomas B. Clarke, congratulating him on the sale of his collection, thanking him for his support and attributing it as the reason for his success as a living artist. 2 pages, single 8vo sheet, Brock House hotel stationery. Notes: "Owing to the delay in the mails I have only just received the news of the great success of your sale. I owe it to you to express to you my sincere thanks for the great benefit that I have received from your encouragement of my work & to congratulate you... Only think of my being alive with a reputation (that you have made for me)."
Clarke sold his entire art collection at American Art Galleries early in February 1899, including his 31 Homer oils, achieving record prices for a living American artist. At the time of this letter, Homer was spending the winter in Florida and the Bahamas, where he accomplished several watercolor studies that eventually resulted in his monumental work The Gulf Stream.
