HOMER, WINSLOW. Two Autograph Letters Signed, to collector Thomas B. Clarke, concerning paintings he is sending to Chicago to be exhibited at the Columbian Exhibition and apologizing that he has none to send to the Fine Art Society but explaining that it is not because he opposes them. The first 2 pages; the second 1 page, each on single 8vo sheets; a bit toned. Scarboro, 24 and 27 January 1893

Notes: 24 january: "The paintings that I am now sending to Chicago I have good reasons to prefer that they should join my name and be owned by me. If they return I will remember your interest in these two pictures and will notify you when they are for sale."
27 january: "I regret that I have no pictures for the Fine Art Society. You are misinformed if you understand that 'I oppose them.' The pictures now at Richards will go to Chicago as per list without any risk or delay."
Homer sent about a dozen paintings to the World's Fair and he received a gold medal for his accomplishment. Among his best known works were exhibited, including Eight Bells, The Fog Warning, Lost on the Grand Banks, A Great Gale, Coast in Winter and Hound and Hunter.
