- Notes: "I am sure you are well aware of the pitiful condition in which the so-called intellectual population of Central and Eastern Europe is finding itself, due to unsettled economic conditions, the constantly mounting cost of living, and the actual scarcity of foodstuffs... I feel that we have a strong obligation toward the colleges of Central and Eastern Europe for the great services they have rendered in the past, in addition to our store of knowledge, both technical and cultural. To allow these institutions to disintegrate would be a disaster, not only to their own nations but to the whole civilized world..."
