HOOVER, HERBERT. Typed Letter Signed, as Director of the U.S. Food Administration, to U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Brand Whitlock,

HOOVER, HERBERT. Typed Letter Signed, as Director of the U.S. Food Administration, to U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Brand Whitlock, disparaging European awards, stating that he would like the job of rebuilding Belgium and Northern France more than any other, anticipating the release of his forthcoming book, and suggesting that he give speeches in the United States. 1 1/2 pages, 4to, "United States Food Administration" stationary, written on two sheets; folds. (AKF) Washington, 5 January 1918

  • Notes: "As to European decorations, I have a complete abhorrence of all such toys. I do not want any distinction of this kind whatever . . . .
"As to the questions of re-building in Belgium and Northern France,-- it is the one job that I would like to have. I believe that it contains usefulness . . . beyond any other occupation after this War is ended, and there is nothing that would appeal to me so much as to join with you . . . .
"I believe that it would be worth an infinity of food to the Allies . . . if you could . . . give eight or ten addresses at prominent points in the United States. More especially do we need this now . . . to instill in the American farmer's mind the fact that it is up to him to win the War. . . ."
