Silver print, the image measuring 340x267 mm; 13 3/8x10½ inches, the sheet slightly larger, with Bristol's signature in pencil on verso, and his block-lettered signature and negative date in pencil on the overmat, and a typed label with caption information, and his signature and edition notation in ink on the undermat verso.

This photograph was taken while accompanying John Steinbeck in the central valley of California collecting material for his novel The Grapes of Wrath. This print is limited to an edition of 50.

  • Condition: Horace Bristol's "Joad Family Applying for Relief (The Grapes of Wrath)" (1938; printed circa 1990) is in excellent condition. The print is rich, clean, and neat, and without apparent flaw.

    The margins and verso are also neat and clean. The original overmat is overall neat and clean, with just a couple trace soiling marks that are not obtrusive. The print is tipped from the top margin to the undermat.

    With Bristol's signature in pencil on print verso. Also with his block-lettered signature and negative date in pencil on the overmat, and a typed label with caption information, and his signature and edition notation (30/50) in ink on the undermat verso.
