(HORAE B.M.V.) [Book of Hours.] Undetermined French use. illuminated liturgical manuscript in french and latin, written in black ink, 13 lines, recto and verso, on vellum. with six (of ?) somewhat crude miniatures in colors and gold within floral borders, and numerous small decorated initials in gold in pink or blue with penwork in white. 97 (of ?) leaves; lacks first leaf of Calendar and leaf 60 (apparently with miniature). 110x78 mm, 16th-century calf with gilt Crucifixion stamp on covers, spine ends chipped, cover corners worn through, catch and clasp removed with resulting hole in center of cover fore edges; marginal soiling, surface wear on miniatures, stain in upper outer corner of the last 10 leaves. France, later 15th century
- Notes: The manuscript contains the Calendar, Hours of the Virgin, Penitential Psalms, Litany, prayers to the Virgin, and reading from the Gospel of St. John, but not the Office of the Dead. The miniatures show the Annunciation; the Visitation; the Adoration of the Magi; the Presentation in the Temple; the Coronation of the Virgin; and David in Prayer. The Calendar includes the feast of St. Malo on November 15, suggesting possible Breton origin.
