Horatio Nelson

Autograph Letter Signed, to artist Robert Barker ("Mr. Barker"),

remarking that a better explanation of the Battle of Copenhagen could be given if his son [Henry Aston Barker] would visit him. 1 page, oblong 8vo; mounted to a larger sheet, folds. With address panel from the original envelope, addressed in holograph.

Merton [London], 21 January 1802.

  • Notes: "I have received a number of queries [as to] the action of Copenhagen and I think if Mr. Barker Jun'r will come here that I can in 10 minutes tell him more than writing a quire of paper."

Beginning in 1793, Robert Barker and his son Henry displayed panorama paintings in a building designed for their exhibition in London's Leicester Square. Begun after a meeting between Robert and Lord Nelson in 1801, Robert and son painted and exhibited a panorama entitled  Lord Nelson's Attack on Copenhagen depicting the First Battle of Copenhagen in which the British fleet attacked and defeated a Dano-Norwegian force in order to prevent a Danish alliance with France against Britain.
