- Notes: Yukio Mishima, the subject of Hosoe's photographs, was a celebrated Japanese novelist and activist. Mishima was committed to the idea of an imperial Japan and founded a private army called Tatenokai (Shield Society) to protect the Emperor. On November 25, 1970, shortly before the publication of this edition, Mishima delivered the final volume of his magnum opus the sea of fertility to his publishers. The same day he and the other members of Tatenokai took over the Japanese Self-Defense Forces headquarters in Tokyo. After reading a manifesto to his captive audience he committed Seppuku, ritual suicide.
