(HOUDINI, HARRY.) Warning. Curious small letterpress broadside, which has often been attributed to Houdini, stating that Conan Doyle is deluded with regard to spiritualism and that he is incapable of separating fact from fiction. One page, in small 4to format (9x7 1/2 inches); fold partially reinforced on verso. Np, April 1922

  • Notes: The broadside is anonymous but it is attributed to Houdini. The dispute between Houdini and Conan Doyle is well documented and at least the fierceness of the polemic is suggestive of Houdini. The text of the broadside however is in language much more sophisticated than that available to Houdini. While Houdini may be responsible for this veiled diatribe, the language of the piece is certainly that of another writer. The polemic is very strongly worded and concludes, "Have we no regard for the rising generation? Are we to allow a hopelessly deceived fanatic to befog our youth? Is there no one in this country who can check his influence?"
