  • Notes: first edition of housman''s first book. The entire first printing, made at Housman''s expense after Macmillan rejected the book, consisted of 500 sets of sheets, of which 150 were diverted for the American issue, 250 bound for the first British issue, and 100 bound up slightly later in a second binding lot for Britain. Hayward 305. In second state binding with "Shropshire" measuring 37 mm wide. Laid in is a typed copy of a poem with the penciled note "last, last [sic] poem, sung at his funeral. [?] Evans, who attended, gave me this copy." Carter, Sparrow, & White, 1; Hayward 305.
