Hovenden, Thomas. The Last Moments of John Brown.
Untitled etching by Hovenden after his own painting, 29x21 inches; matted and framed. Philadelphia: Gebbie, 1885
-
Notes: One of a limited but unspecified number of specially etched copies. Hovenden (1840-1895) was not only the painter of this work, but the etcher as well. The popular image was reproduced in lithographed form in numerous sizes. The present etching is scarce.
The print portrays Brown being escorted to his death down courthouse steps, where he kisses a baby held up by a black woman. All around Brown are soldiers and behind him are numerous blacks straining to catch a glimpse of the man who was willing to die for their freedom.
