HOVEY, RICHARD. POEMS. Tall 8vo, original green cloth, gilt-decorated, some wear at spine ends and fore-corners; rear hinge
cracked; folding cloth case. Washington: N. B. Smith, 1880 FIRST EDITION of the author's first book. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY HOVEY on front flyleaf: "Miss Alice Germond With the compliments of the Author, Richard Hovey/ "My gift that renews in the giving." Swinburne." These poems were published when Hovey was 16 years old and a freshman at Dartmouth. The volume was typeset and printed by Hovey and his classmate Smith whose father owned a print shop in Washington. The book was issued in wrappers and cloth in an edition of approximately 100 copies. The cloth copies are larger in size and scarcer. BAL 9367.
