Before his meteoric rise to fame as father of the "Christy Girls," the artist was known as a "war illustrator." Christy actually spent time in Cuba during the Spanish American War, where he met Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders, and did a series of drawings on the American Revolution for Scribner's. For this cover story on the Boer War, Christy most likely worked from a photograph.
