  • Notes: first edition. "Howard began to investigate the conditions of hospitals (including mental hospitals and quarantine detention houses) shortly after his first prison visits in 1773. The present work is largely devoted to his report on the conditions of various European hospitals, containing both plans and notes on management and personnel"--Norman 1109.     Tipped in are extraneous portraits of Howard and the philanthropist William Wilberforce, and a leaf inscribed: "Mr Howard requests Mr Wilberforce will accept this book from him, as a small testimony of his esteem." Laid in are the bookplates of Wilberforce and Howard A. Kelly.
