HOWARD, TOM (active 1920s-1930s) Execution of Ruth Synder.

HOWARD, TOM (active 1920s-1930s)
Execution of Ruth Synder. Warm-toned silver contact print, 1 1/2x2 inches (3.8x5 cm.), on the original mount, with handwritten notations "Ruth Snyder in chair" on mount recto. 1928

  • Notes: One of the most famous tabloid photographs of the 20th century, New York photojournalist Tom Howard took the picture with a hidden miniature camera, which was strapped to his ankle. A close-up of Snyder appeared on the front page of New York Daily News with the headline: "DEAD!" The picture was so extraordinary that the newspaper ran an additional 750,000 copies to meet public demand.
