HUBERT ROBERT (ATTRIBUTED TO)

(Paris 1733-1808 Paris)
An Italianate Landscape with Ruins of an Aqueduct.

Red chalk on cream laid paper. 253x374 mm; 10x14 3/4 inches. Inscribed "Roberti" and dated "1763" in red chalk, lower center recto. Anchor in a circle watermark.

Robert was in Italy from 1753 to 1765. An identical signature is found on a drawing from the Polakovits donation in the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris (see Maîtres Français 1550-1800, Paris, 1989, number 108). The shorthand representation of the figures in the current work is also characteristic of Robert (see Mastery & Elegance, French Drawings from the Collection of J. E. Horwitz, Boston, 1998, number 91, and 18th Century French Drawings in New York Collections, New York, 1999, number 46).
