Hughes and Weill had just completed theircollaboration on the Broadway musi-cal Street Scene, an adaptation ofElmer Rice's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. During the writing stages, the two became close friends, with Hughes introducing the Harlem jazzscene to Weill. Street Scene premiered on Broadway in January 1947.
