HUGO, VICTOR. Autograph Letter Signed, to composer François-Joseph Fétis," in French, praising his recent concert performance, offering a volume of his poetry as a gesture of his appreciation, and requesting the usage of two passages of music for a new play he was then preparing [probably Lucrèce Borgia]. 2 1/4 pages, 8vo, written on a single folded sheet; small seal tear to upper right corner of signature page, folds. Np, January 16 [circa 1833]

  • Notes: ". . . I cannot tell you to what extent I was delighted by your concert the other day. You are rendering an immense service to art in disinterring these marvels. You are doing the work of an antiquary and an artist. I am grateful to you on both counts. . . . I would like to use in a play, which I am to put on at the rue St. Marin, a few fragments of that beautiful 16th century music which you have rediscovered for us. I would like to hear a few snatches from the roamaniesca di Vilhanico which we heard the other day coming from the gondolier who will appear in the first act, at night on the Venetian lagoon. Would it be indiscreet on my part to ask you if you would let me know what those two admirable airs were so that we may use them. . . ."
Hugo first staged Lucrèce Borgia at the Théâtre Porte-Sainte-Martin in 1833. It was here that Hugo first met the young Juliette Drouet, who would soon become Hugo's lover for the next fifty years. The play was quickly adapted to opera by Donezetti the same year. Lucrezia Borgia premiered at La Scala on 26 December 1833.
Fétis (1784-1871) was a Belgian musicologist who championed the revival of early European music, taught at the Paris Conservatory from 1821 to 1833, and later directed the Brussels conservatory.
