HUME, FERGUS W. Mystery of a Hansom Cab. A Startling and Realistic Story of Melbourne Social Life.

HUME, FERGUS W. The Mystery of a Hansom Cab. A Startling and Realistic Story of Melbourne Social Life. 12mo, original pictorial wrappers, lacking rear wrapper, backstrip foot chipped slightly, staples oxidized at rear; last page stained with small loss to lower corner; housed in custom fleece-lined cloth folding case (LMS booklabel). London: The Hansom Cab Publishing Company, [1887]

  • Notes: second edition, seventh impression, "seventy-fifth thousand" on title-page. Of the first edition (Melbourne, 1886) only four copies are recorded; with only perhaps a half dozen of this vintage extant. Any copy marked less than One Hundredth Thousand is considered very early and scarce for this book. A publishing phenomenon that "ranks as the most successful Detective Story of all time" (Everyman's Dictionary of Literary Biography, 1960). See Glover & Greene, Victorian Detective Fiction, pp. 123-5. Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone.
