"I HAVE NOT YET BEGUN TO FIGHT" (REVOLUTION.) Capt. Paul Jones shooting a Sailor who had attempted to strike his Colours in an Engagement.
"I HAVE NOT YET BEGUN TO FIGHT" (REVOLUTION.) Capt. Paul Jones shooting a Sailor who had attempted to strike his Colours in an Engagement. Hand-colored mezzotint, approximately 14 1/2x10 1/2 inches overall, ample margins; very minor staining, minor losses mostly along the platemark nicely restored; framed. London: Sayer & Bennett, 1 January 1780
- Notes: A wonderful British depiction of John Paul Jones accomplished shortly after his victory against the HMS Serapis, with sword in one hand and a revolver in the other, looking very much the pirate they believed him to be. "The British public liked to make its flesh creep with tales of the terrible Jones, and this print, manifestly designed for nonaristocratic consumption, is a good specimen of such thrillers"--An Album of American Battle Art, page 40; Smith, American Naval Broadsides 24.
