  • Notes:

Ilene (IS) Schuster was one of the few early female adopters of digital artwork; creating works during the mid-1970s and 1980s while attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and working at the University of Michigan's Aerospace department.

Schuster was born in Detroit and received her Masters degree in Fine Art in 1974 from Wayne State University. She moved from Detroit to attend MIT and conducted her post-graduate work in the pioneering art and animation department during the late 1970s. It was at MIT where Schuster had access to the most advanced digital paint system, and she saw the artistic potential of the computer. Schuster continued to spread awareness of this cutting edge medium and to advocate for digital media as a public speaker, educator, curator, and by directly contributing to technological advances.

Schuster's career broke barriers and blurred the boundaries of art, science, and digital technology. Her work can be found in several important public and private collections, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art; Detroit Institute of Art;  and Shariah Art Museum, Dubai, among others.
