(IMMIGRATION.) Pair of cartes-de-visite of the Chinese exchange student Liang Dunyan. Albumen prints, 4 x 2 1/4 inches, on original mounts with backmarks of R.S. de Lamater of Hartford, captioned in pencil on verso "Liang Tun-Yen '78"; very faintly scuffed in image, otherwise minimal wear. Hartford, CT, circa 1878

  • Notes: A different side of the Chinese-American story. Liang Dunyan or Liang Tun-Yen (1857-1924) was one of several Chinese students sent to study in Connecticut, graduating from Hartford High School in 1878 and then attending Yale through 1881. He returned to China and had a long career as a diplomat, serving as Chinese minister to the United States in 1907, and as Secretary of Foreign Affairs intermittently from 1908 to 1917.
