  • Notes: The author was John Borland (1796-1885) of Scotland, who emigrated to America in 1843. His diary and memoirs are here transcribed by his daughter Janet Borland Bone''s daughter Chloe Kearns in 1935. Pages 7-23 are diary entries devoted to his 1843 journey to America, followed by his journey up the Mississippi from New Orleans to St. Louis on pages 23-28. He complains that "whoever comes as steerage passengers must lay their account to undergo a very severe patience" and observes along the river "all cotton plantations and all wrought with that most hellish system of slavery" (page 26). The rest of the volume is a summary of Borland''s 1883-84 diary (pages 31-35) written in Peoria County, IL, plus some additional poems he wrote in that period.
