(IMMIGRATION.) Photograph of Colgate student Moung Kyaw of Burma.

(IMMIGRATION.) Photograph of Colgate student Moung Kyaw of Burma. Salt print, 7¼ x 5¼ inches oval, on plain 10¾ x 9-inch mount with his name inscribed in English and Burmese script; moderate foxing. [Hamilton, NY], circa early 1860s

  • Notes: Moung Kyaw (1843-1883) is regarded as the first international student at what became Colgate University in upstate New York. He emigrated from Burma (now Myanmar) at age 16 and graduated with the Class of 1868. He returned to Burma as a Christian missionary in 1869. This appears to be a class album leaf from early in his American journey.
