IMPORTANT COLONIAL NEW JERSEY DOCUMENT (NEW JERSEY.) Morris, Lewis. Autograph Document Signed, as Royal Governor of New Jersey, a speech addressed to the "Gentlemen of the council and Assembly," announcing that the "support of the Government is Expired." 1 page, folded folio sheet with integral blank; minor toning, a bit ragged along the edge of the terminal leaf; tipped to a larger sheet. Np, "October 1743"

  • Notes: "It may perhaps be thought needles in me to tell you that the support of the government is expired; that being a thing not unknowne to any part of the Legislature. The Petition from the President and council, the Speaker and diverse members of the Assembly to his Majesty, for a separate Governour from that of New-York, wherein they Assure his Majestie that the inhabitants of this Province, are Equally willing and able to support a distinct governour with diverse of the neighboring collonies who enjoy that Benefit under his Majestie; which humble request or rather Prayer, upon the assurances therein given to his Majesty, he was most graciously pleased to grant... there seems no room to doubt that Pursuant to the assurances given you will on your parts readily and most willingly agree to such a disposition as will be most suitable... For my part I shall willingly give my Assent to any laws in my power to do, that shall be beneficial to the publick..."
Morris (1671-1746) served as the first separate Royal Governor of New Jersey (prior to 1738 the same royal official governed New Jersey and New York), and his term was marked by dissention between himself and the Assembly, aptly reflected in this speech. Morris refused to approve bills and dissolved the Assembly twice during his tenure, with the Assembly in return letting the financial support of the government expire in 1743.
