(INDIANA.) Twigg, W.A.; auctioneer. Great Sale of the Personal Property of the Estate of Jacob Schnee.

(INDIANA.) Twigg, W.A.; auctioneer. Great Sale of the Personal Property of the Estate of Jacob Schnee. Letterpress broadside, 22 x 17 3/4 inches; minor foxing and wear at folds. New Harmony, IN: Disseminator Office, 9 October 1838

  • Notes: Jacob Schnee (1784-1838) was a printer, farmer, and educator who settled in the utopian community of New Harmony founded by Robert Owen. The cash-free society had collapsed by 1829, but a thriving town continued to develop in its place. This broadside advertises the sale of Schnee's effects, including 75,000 pounds of pork from hogs to be slaughtered after the sale. Nothing signifies the end of utopia better than the arrival of auctioneers on the scene. Not in Shaw-Shoemaker or WorldCat, not found at auction, and possibly unique.
