(INDIANS.) Jefferson, Thomas. Message from the President of the United States, transmitting a letter from Governor Claiborne

on the subject of a small tribe of Alibama Indians, on the Western side of the Mississippi. 7 pages. 8vo, disbound; minor foxing and toning, short edge tear to title. Washington, 1809

  • Notes: An interesting government document, dated 30 December 1808, in which Jefferson forwards a letter from William C. C. Claiborne to the House and Senate, which informs them that a tribe of Choctaws had refused compensation to the widow of an Indian man killed by a white settler and advocates that a tribe of Alibamas be granted permission to establish a small village on United States territory west of the Mississippi, though the land in question had been claimed by white individuals. Jefferson, in his forwarding letter, agrees with Claiborne writing, "I suppose it will be the interest of the United States to encourage the wandering tribes of that country to reduce themselves to fixed habitations, whenever they are so disposed."
