INFERIOR PRINTING--BUT FINE FOR AMERICANS CARROLL, LEWIS. The Game of Logic. Frontispiece and numerous diagrams. 8vo, gilt-lettered red cloth, few soil marks; cloth chemise and slipcase; bookplate. Lacks accompanying envelope with card-diagram and board counters. London, 1886

  • Notes: scarce first private edition printed by Baxter of Oxford in an edition of approximately fifty copies. It did not reach Carroll's standards and was aborted after the 50 copies and reprinted by Clay. In his letter to Macmillan, he states, "they will do very well for the Americans, who ought not to be very particular as to quality, as they insist on having books for very cheap... I would rather that these Oxford copies were not sold in England at all..."--from letter reprinted in Madan, 193. A nice copy despite lacking the game pieces.
