INSCRIBED BY HUBBARD AND ROWAN
HUBBARD, ELBERT. A Message to Garcia. Decorative title-page border. 8vo, gilt-lettered limp suede with pink endpapers. East Aurora: Roycrofters, 1901
- Notes: inscribed and signed by hubbard and rowan on front endpaper: "To Mrs. Barney with love & blessings ever from Fra Elbertus" [Hubbard]. And below it: "For Mrs. Barney from her friend who carried the message to Garcia. A.S. Rowan East Aurora, N.Y., July 5, 1903." Also laid in are a small Roycroft Shop postcard Signed by Rowan (as Capt.), and a 1955 printing of a description of the work. This moral story is based on a true occurrence at the onset of the Spanish-American War. As fighting broke out, President McKinley commissioned Lieut. Andrew S. Rowan to carry a message to the insurgent guerrilla leader General Garcia who was at an unknown location in the vast mountains of Cuba. Rowan's successful mission became a celebrated feat in military history.
